In 2004, director Michael Gondry and screenwriter Charlie Kaufman released Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a sci-fi, romantic dramedy that, if you had the plot explained to you with no context, sounds built to fail. With an all star ensemble cast in Jim Carrey (in one of his first honest to goodness dramatic roles), Kate Winslet, Tom Wilkinson, Elijah Wood, Mark Ruffalo and Kirsten Dunst, the final product is a heartwrenching realisation that true love is hard, and true love is harsh.
